According to Muppet Wiki, "Elmo is a furry red Muppet monster. He is three-and-a-half
years old and refers to himself in the third person. He first appeared on Sesame Street in the 1979 as an unnamed monster,
performed by Brian Muehl (and occasionally by Jerry Nelson) from 1979-1984. Afterward, Richard Hunt performed him for
a year. Kevin Clash took over the role of Elmo in 1985 because he was the only other Muppeteer who could bring
him to life. Elmo's favorite toy is David, which is named for David, the former proprietor of Hooper's Store.
In 1996, a popular doll called Tickle Me Elmo was manufactured in his likeness and became the best-selling toy in the United
States. From Season 30 (1998-99) to Season 42 (2011), Elmo became so popular that he was given his own full segment
on "Sesame Street" called Elmo's World. On Elmo's World, he was accompanied by his goldfish, Dorothy and the
Noodle Family. From Season 43 (2012) to Season 46 (2016), the other Elmo-centered
segment titled "Elmo the Musical" aired in its place. Currently since Season 47 (2017), Elmo's World is re-introduced
to the show (alternatively referred to as "Elmo's Wonderful World"), now five minutes in length."
